Origin Story

Bali Blue Moon is a single-origin coffee grown in the highland villages of Kintamani, Bali, Indonesia — one of the island’s most celebrated coffee-growing regions. The name “Blue Moon” reflects the rare, exceptional quality of this lot: beans selected for their outstanding clarity and sweetness. Grown at elevations between 1,200 and 1,700 meters on the slopes of Mount Batur, these beans benefit from rich volcanic soil and a cool, misty climate that slows the cherry’s development, concentrating its natural sugars and complexity.

Farm & Processing Details

  • Region: Kintamani Highlands, Bali, Indonesia
  • Altitude: 1,200–1,700 meters above sea level
  • Varietal: Typica
  • Processing: Wet-hulled (Giling Basah) — a traditional Indonesian method that produces the characteristic full body and low acidity this coffee is known for
  • Harvest Season: May–October
  • Certification: Shade-grown; smallholder farmer cooperative

Kintamani farmers have been cultivating coffee for generations, many on small family plots of just 1–3 acres. The cooperative model ensures fair wages and consistent quality standards across all member farms.

Brewing Recommendations

Bali Blue Moon’s smooth, chocolatey profile makes it incredibly versatile. Here’s how to get the best out of it:

Drip / Automatic Brewer (Recommended for Beginners)
Use a ratio of 1:15 (coffee to water). Start with medium grind. Brew at 195–205°F. This is an excellent everyday drinker — great black or with a splash of cream.

French Press
Coarse grind | 4-minute steep | 1:12 ratio. The full-immersion brewing method enhances this coffee’s natural body and brings out deeper chocolate and caramel notes. A fantastic choice for this bean.

Pour Over (Chemex or V60)
Medium-fine grind | 3–4 minute total brew time | 1:16 ratio. Expect a cleaner, brighter cup that highlights the vanilla and cinnamon finish. Bloom for 30 seconds before pouring.

Espresso
Fine grind | 9 bars pressure | 25–30 second pull | 1:2 ratio. Pulls a rich, low-acid shot with excellent crema. Ideal as a base for lattes and cappuccinos. The cinnamon and chocolate notes pair beautifully with steamed milk.

Cold Brew
Coarse grind | 16–18 hour steep in cold water | 1:8 ratio (concentrate). The low acidity of Bali Blue Moon makes it one of our top cold brew picks. Smooth, sweet, and mellow straight over ice.

Why You’ll Love It

If you’re new to single-origin coffees, Bali Blue Moon is the perfect starting point. It has the approachable, crowd-pleasing flavor of a great chocolate dessert with none of the harsh bitterness often associated with dark roasts. Whether you’re brewing your morning cup at home or entertaining guests, this is a coffee that never disappoints.

Why Air-Roasted

Why Air-Roasted

At Hartford Coffee, we air-roast every bean in small batches right here in St. Louis. Air roasting suspends the beans on a bed of hot air, roasting them evenly from every angle without the scorching or smoky char of traditional drum roasters. Small batches mean we can dial in each origin to bring out its unique character — so you get cleaner flavor, brighter acidity, and a smoother cup, every time.
