Origin Story

Ethiopia Sidamo Oromia comes from the birthplace of coffee itself — the Sidama Zone of southern Ethiopia, where wild Coffea arabica trees have grown for over a thousand years. “Oromia” refers to the regional cooperative union that represents over 200,000 smallholder farmers across Ethiopia’s most celebrated growing zones. This coffee is grown at extraordinary altitudes in a region of dense forests, ancient heirloom varieties, and generations of traditional farming knowledge that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else on earth. Hartford Coffee air-roasts this exceptional bean at a medium-dark level, preserving the distinctive Ethiopian character while deepening the fruit sweetness and adding a silky body.

Farm & Processing Details

  • Region: Sidama Zone, SNNPR, Ethiopia
  • Altitude: 1,700–2,200 meters above sea level
  • Varietal: Ethiopian Heirloom (indigenous wild varieties)
  • Processing: Natural (Dry Process) — cherries dried whole in the sun, producing intense fruit and wine-like complexity
  • Harvest Season: October–January
  • Certification: Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU); Fair Trade

The Oromia Cooperative Union was founded in 1999 to give Ethiopian farmers direct access to international markets, cutting out middlemen and ensuring premium prices flow directly to farming families. Their model has become a global benchmark for equitable coffee trade.

Brewing Recommendations

Ethiopia Sidamo Oromia’s natural process fruit complexity and wine-like body are best showcased through methods that honor its aromatic intensity.

Pour Over (V60 or Chemex) — Most Recommended
Medium-fine grind | 1:16 ratio | 3–4 minutes | 200°F. The pour over is the premier method for this coffee. The clean paper filtration preserves every layer of berry and jasmine aroma while the stone fruit sweetness lingers on the palate. Bloom for 45 seconds.

Drip / Automatic Brewer
Medium grind | 1:15 ratio | 195–205°F. An accessible everyday option that still captures the fruit-forward character. Enjoy it black for the full aromatic experience.

French Press
Coarse grind | 1:12 ratio | 4-minute steep. Produces a bold, wine-forward cup with pronounced berry notes and a heavy mouthfeel. Outstanding for those who love big, expressive coffees.

Cold Brew
Coarse grind | 1:8 ratio | 14–18 hours cold. The natural process fruit character transforms cold — deep, syrupy berry notes with zero bitterness. One of the most distinctive cold brews you’ll ever taste.

Why You’ll Love It

Ethiopia Sidamo Oromia is not just a coffee — it’s a connection to the origins of coffee culture itself. Few coffees in the world can claim the heritage, terroir, and complexity of Ethiopian heirloom naturals. Every cup is a reminder that coffee is one of the world’s great agricultural treasures, and Hartford Coffee is proud to bring it to your cup.

Why Air-Roasted

Why Air-Roasted

At Hartford Coffee, we air-roast every bean in small batches right here in St. Louis. Air roasting suspends the beans on a bed of hot air, roasting them evenly from every angle without the scorching or smoky char of traditional drum roasters. Small batches mean we can dial in each origin to bring out its unique character — so you get cleaner flavor, brighter acidity, and a smoother cup, every time.
